JAGO & ROBYN

Double Portrait - Acrylic on canvas 101.6cm x 76.2cm– July 2019

My latest painting captures a moment during the pandemic lockdown between a brother and sister – named Jago &Robyn.

A pane of glass separates the pair of them. The moment captured my imagination and it felt like a suitable subject to paint during a global pandemic. Exploring the notion of separation and yet closeness. Robyn’s wonderful childlike intrigue of the water droplets have built up and are dripping down the glasses surface; Jago sprayed the water on the windowpane from the garden hose which has captured his little sisters imagination. I painted this water in a more abstract way, by painting around the droplets.

Jago’s face is in bright sunshine, so the side of his face I close to bright white, whilst Robyn’s skin is a more muted and has more diffuse, interior lighting falling on it. Which is a subtlety to the painting that I thought only sub-consciously apparent to the viewer.

The painting was commissioned by an old University friend.
